AMD Brazos vs Intel Core i5: comparative tests.

On the Internet appeared the results of a direct comparison between an Intel Core i5 and Zacate APU with AMD Brazos platform. The solution proposed by AMD seems to dominate on the benefit side and consumption. Significant test for the Llano APU.
Intel vs AMD

The test we propose today is not the first confrontation between the best Intel processors with AMD latest proposals in the Fusion series. Fusion Architecture, which provides for the integration of the CPU with a graphics controller, is showing great results. The clash between an Intel Core i5-520M and Zacate APU platform belong with the Brazos has been particularly interesting in several respects.

If the Intel processor required during the tests, use levels are near 100%, the AMD solution was much less committed. However not only. The Intel Core i5 showed the consumption of about 38.3 W and against 19 W AMD APU. This detail is very significant considering the class of devices that can equip these processors. On the benefit side naked and raw, the AMD Fusion Brazos APU has developed 21.8 GFlops against 8.8 the other party.

The comment by the designer of the test does not leave much room for interpretation: “… half of consumption, half price, performance 2-3 times ….” At the same time were also carried out tests on Llano which, remember, is an APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) used to power desktop systems and built with 32-nanometer manufacturing technology. This APU consists in fact of four cores Phenom II processor and a graphics core compatible with the DirextX11 graphics libraries. The availability of Llano is planned for summer of 2011, lagging behind the official roadmap.

The tests were carried out at the Technical Forum and Exhibition 2010 in Taiwan, where AMD has shown itself a system based on Llano quad-core action. The aim was to play a movie in high definition with management of a simulation-based DirectCompute and four instances of HyperPi. Despite the workload, the APU was not worried too much and has done its job with a degree of calm.

AMD Brazos is a platform dedicated to alternative, however, the low-power portable devices such as laptop, which will be equipped with Zacate and Ontario APU, at least initially.
