ATI’s most powerful mobile GPU is manufactured in single 40nm process, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 has a 128 bits memory bandwidth and based on RV840 chip, as used in ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5750 and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5770 desktop graphics cards. ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5750 With desktop clock speeds and shader count on the level of a desktop, an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5770 is ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 technically accurate performance between two desktop models.

The video memory of ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 are DDR3, GDDR3 and GDDR5 and will be fitted – depends on notebook manufacturers. In practice, only GDDR5 video memory that can be used because it graphics card will be thwarted, for example, with GDDR3 video memory. Depends on type of video memory, and it will change the memory clock.

ATI was able to increase the performance of ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 compared to the previous generation by about 20%. With a power consumption of 50 watts, a ATI Mobility Radeon HD5870 graphics card is installed only in notebooks with a good cooling system and a powerful power supply. Most of the graphics card in notebooks was built from 17 inches. there were also few 15-inch gaming notebook with the Radeon HD 5870.

Switchable Graphics (Intel) and PowerXpress (AMD) in ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5000 GPUs also support the power saving features, which enable an integrated on-board graphics unit to switch.

A new feature of the HD 5000 series is the multi-monitor Eyefinity technology. Apart from professional support solutions, a mobile graphics chip has more than 2 external monitors. In theory, the ATI Mobility Radeon HD5870 series has monitors up to 6 monitors. However, this technology must be supported by each notebook manufacturer. In practice, a mobile HD 5000 graphics card has only 2 – 3 supports external display devices.
